The makers of Karuppu have issued an apology after a dialogue in the film sparked criticism on social media for allegedly mocking legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja and his stand on copyright protection.

Directed by RJ Balaji and starring Suriya in the lead role, the Tamil film has been receiving a positive response in theatres. However, a scene referring to the song Poradada from the 1985 film Alai Osai triggered controversy online, with several users alleging that it indirectly targeted Ilaiyaraaja over copyright strikes related to unauthorised use of his songs in films.

Following the backlash, production house Dream Warrior Pictures released a statement on X expressing regret over the issue and clarifying that there was no intention to disrespect the veteran musician.

The statement said the production banner held “sincere respect and admiration” for Ilaiyaraaja and acknowledged his immense contribution to Indian cinema and music.

“We understand that a particular dialogue appearing in Karuppu has caused concern and has upset him. We sincerely regret that the dialogue has resulted in such sentiments,” the statement read.

The makers further clarified that the dialogue was part of a broader satirical context and was not aimed personally at the composer.

“There was absolutely no intention to offend, hurt, or disrespect Mr. Ilaiyaraaja, his contribution, or his rights in any manner,” the statement added.

As a mark of respect, the production house also confirmed that the controversial portion would either be removed or modified in future versions and subsequent releases of the film.
