Actor Kirsten Dunst has joined the sequel to A Minecraft Movie, stepping into the role of Alex after earlier expressing interest in being part of the franchise.
Dunst announced the development on Instagram, describing it as a “dream come true.” Her character was hinted at in a post-credits scene of the first film. In the original movie, Alex was voiced by Kate McKinnon.
The sequel will feature returning cast members, including Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks.
Released in April 2025, A Minecraft Movie was a major commercial success, earning close to USD 1 billion globally. The film is based on the hugely popular Minecraft franchise.
In a previous interview, Dunst had said she was eager to join the sequel, mentioning her children’s fondness for the film and her own interest in being part of a successful mainstream project. She had also joked about wanting to work on a film that performs well commercially, referencing her recent project Roofman, which had a relatively modest budget.

Director Jared Hess will return to helm A Minecraft Movie 2, working from a script co-written with Chris Galletta. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 23, 2027.
