Scarlett Johansson is looking back at the early years of her career and she’s not sugar-coating it.
In a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-nominated actor described the early 2000s as a “tough” phase for women in Hollywood, where appearance often overshadowed talent and opportunities were far from equal.
Johansson revealed that during her formative years, it was widely normalised for actresses to be judged harshly based on their looks. “There was a lot of focus on how women appeared,” she shared, pointing out that meaningful roles for young actresses were limited and often repetitive.
Rising to fame with films like Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, Johansson said she frequently encountered stereotypical roles from the “other woman” to the “bombshell”, leaving little room for depth or variety.
“It felt like being boxed into a certain image,” she noted, explaining how the industry at the time offered narrow character arcs for women her age.
The Black Widow star also spoke about the pressure young actors’ face early in their careers. With fierce competition and uncertainty, she admitted it often felt necessary to accept every opportunity, even if the role lacked creative fulfilment.
“There’s always that fear what if this is the last offer?” she said, adding that such anxieties can push actors into choices that don’t necessarily align with their artistic goals.
Over time, Johansson learned to step back and trust her place in the industry. She began choosing projects more selectively and found creative grounding in New York’s theatre scene, away from the constant spotlight of Hollywood.
Today, she sees a noticeable shift. According to Johansson, the industry is evolving, with more nuanced and empowering roles now available to young women, a change she welcomes.

Reflecting on her journey, she said gaining that confidence took time. “Eventually, I realised I didn’t have to chase everything. The right work would come, and people wouldn’t forget,” she said.
Her story is both a reflection of how far the industry has come and a reminder of the challenges many actors once had to navigate behind the glamour.
