As the city of Kolkata turned into an artistic arena for Durga Puja, many Pandals are themed around "Operation Sindoor", India's precise strikes against Pakistan's terror-centres in retaliation for the Pahalgam terrorist strike, which killed 23 Indians, are attracting crowds.
This theme particularly highlights Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, who, for the first time, became the spokespersons of a Military Operation.
The Pandal set by the famous Young Boys Club in central Kolkata is evoking a huge interest, and people are thronging it to see the “Operation Sindoor themed Durga Puja pandal in which the valour and sacrifices of the Indian soldiers to defend their country against terrorism are depicted.
The Club is in its 56th year of celebration of the Durga Puja. Each year, their pandal is visited by lakhs of people for its artistic grandeur and socially conscious and inspiring themes.
The most striking feature of this pandal is the inclusion of impressive replicas of Colonel Sophia Qureshi and Wing Commander Vyomika Singh—two gallant women officers honoured for their role in 'Operation Sindoor.'
Through these replicas, the organisers have showcased the growing strength, leadership, and indomitable courage of women in the military. These female officers symbolise the brave men and women of the Indian Army who are playing a leading role in serving the nation.
Their prominent display in the pandal emphasises that men and women stand shoulder to shoulder in the nation's defence, and that the power of Goddess Durga resides in every soldier who stands ready to defend the country.
The pandal is decorated to evoke the feel of a battlefield, showcasing artefacts of Indian Army tanks, fighter jets, and missiles. These artefacts are not merely decorative, but a heartfelt tribute to the courage and dedication of the country's soldiers.
Speaking to the media, Rakesh Singh, the main organiser of the Young Boys Club, explained the significance of this theme. He said, "Durga Puja is not just a celebration for us, but an emotion that binds people together."
Every year, we strive to present a theme that not only attracts visitors but also conveys a profound message. This year's theme, 'Operation Sindoor,' is our true tribute to the brave soldiers of our country who protect our borders with unwavering courage and dedication. Through this puja, we want to celebrate their valour and instil a sense of pride and patriotism in all visitors."
Co-organiser Vinod Singh emphasised that their goal each year is to organise a Durga Puja that leaves a lasting impression not just through grandeur, but through meaningful stories. He added that with 'Operation Sindoor,' they are honouring the indomitable spirit of the armed forces and reminding everyone that the power of Goddess Durga resides in every soldier who protects our country.
While the pandal's theme is modern and patriotic, the idol of Goddess Durga, created by sculptor Kushdhwaj Bera, retains its traditional style. This unique design presents a harmonious blend of old and new. While the pandal pays tribute to the valour of the Indian Army, the idol of the goddess honours religious faith and tradition. This combination demonstrates that devotion and patriotism complement each other.
The Young Boys Club has encouraged people from all walks of life to attend this puja. The theme "Operation Sindoor" invites you to witness and celebrate this festival with pride and devotion. Through this theme, Kolkata's Durga Puja has once again proved that it is not just a religious festival, but also a powerful platform for expressing social awareness and national sentiment.
