Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday highlighted the “dual-use dilemma” of Artificial Intelligence, cautioning that while the technology offers major advantages, it also presents serious security challenges such as deepfakes, cyber warfare and autonomous weapons.

Addressing the ANI National Security Summit 2.0, Singh said AI cannot be viewed only through an optimistic lens, especially in the context of national security. He noted that advanced AI systems capable of strengthening sectors like banking, healthcare and power infrastructure could also be misused to exploit vulnerabilities if they fall into the wrong hands.

Drawing a parallel with the mythological figure Bhasmasur, he said the same power that brings benefits can also become destructive. “Like Bhasmasur, who turned his boon into a threat, AI too can pose risks if not handled responsibly,” he remarked.

At the same time, Singh underlined the growing role of AI in strengthening India’s defence capabilities. He referred to its use in operations such as “Operation Sindoor” and in enhancing the accuracy of systems like the BrahMos missile. He also cited the Sudarshan Air Defence system as an example of effective AI integration.

The minister said the armed forces are working on a roadmap that incorporates AI, machine learning and big data analytics to tackle emerging threats and improve operational efficiency. These technologies, he added, are expected to play a key role in making the forces more capable in the future.

Beyond military applications, Singh noted that AI is being used to improve administrative processes and welfare initiatives. He pointed to an AI-enabled platform developed to simplify pension procedures for veterans and retired personnel.

Emphasising a balanced approach, Singh said that while AI can significantly enhance national security and economic progress, its risks must be carefully managed as they are likely to grow in the coming years.
