In an effort to improve healthcare access in remote regions, the Indian Army organised a large-scale medical camp in Anderwan Yarmuqam in Ganderbal district, officials said on Wednesday.

The camp, conducted by the Army’s Anderwan Camp, brought free consultations, treatment and medicines to residents of villages that often lack access to proper medical facilities.

Thousands of villagers from surrounding far-flung areas reportedly attended the camp. For many, it was the first opportunity to consult qualified doctors without travelling long distances through difficult terrain.

A team of Army doctors and medical personnel carried out health check-ups, diagnosed a range of illnesses and distributed medicines free of cost. The initiative was particularly helpful for elderly residents, women and children, who are frequently cut off from regular healthcare due to poor road connectivity and limited infrastructure.

The camp also included awareness sessions for schoolchildren on hygiene, sanitation and emergency response skills such as CPR. Officials said the aim was to equip young people with practical health knowledge that could prove useful during emergencies.

Residents expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying such camps not only provide medical relief but also offer reassurance and support in isolated areas. Many described it as a rare but much-needed service in a region where healthcare remains a challenge.

Army officials said similar outreach programmes would continue in remote and underserved locations to ensure essential healthcare reaches communities most in need.
