The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on Wednesday said it has filed police complaints at two locations in Assam against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing him of making objectionable remarks during an election rally.
According to an RSS spokesperson, the complaints seek legal action over statements described as “derogatory, provocative, and communally sensitive,” allegedly made at a recent rally in southern Assam.
In its submissions, the organisation claimed that Kharge made the remarks while addressing a gathering in Nilambazar, under the Karimganj South Assembly constituency in Sribhumi district. The complaints quote him as likening the RSS and the BJP to a “poisonous snake,” drawing a comparison in the context of a religious reference.
The RSS has expressed strong concern over the comments, stating that such language is inflammatory and could incite hostility, intimidation, or even violence against its members and supporters, as well as those of the BJP.
The organisation further argued that the remarks amount to a “corrupt electoral practice” under Section 83 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. It alleged that the statements could foster enmity between different political and social groups and may be seen as an attempt to intimidate the public.
The complaints also warn that portraying the ideology of the RSS and BJP in such terms could be interpreted as a call for harm against their members. The organisation added that the remarks risk deepening communal divisions between Hindu and Muslim communities, potentially affecting public order and the electoral atmosphere in the state.
Additionally, the complainants cautioned that failure to address the issue promptly could lead to heightened tensions or clashes.
The complaints were filed by RSS North Assam secretary Khagen Saikia at Dispur Police Station, and South Assam secretary Jyotsnamoy Chakraborty at Silchar Police Station.
