External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday spoke with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, conveying India’s strong solidarity and full support in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at Bondi Beach that targeted a Jewish gathering and claimed 15 lives.
During the phone conversation, Jaishankar expressed India’s condolences over the loss of innocent lives and reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism. He later shared details of the interaction on social media, stating that he had conveyed India’s deepest sympathies and support to Australia following the attack.
The shooting took place on Sunday during Hanukkah celebrations at the iconic Sydney beach. According to Australian authorities, two gunmen opened fire, killing 15 people and injuring more than 40 others.
Soon after the incident, Jaishankar strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act of terrorism and expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese termed the incident a “dark moment” for the country, stating that the attack was a targeted act of violence against Jewish Australians on a day meant for celebration and faith. He said security agencies were working to identify and apprehend anyone linked to the attack.
The Bondi Beach shooting comes amid a recent rise in antisemitic incidents across Australia, raising concerns among authorities and the Jewish community.
Australian officials identified the attackers as a father-son duo, Sajid Akram and Naveed Akram. The father was shot dead by police during the operation, while the son sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among several world leaders who condemned the attack. In a message posted on social media on Sunday, Modi strongly denounced the violence, calling it a “ghastly terrorist attack” targeting people celebrating the first day of Hanukkah.
“On behalf of the people of India, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. India stands in solidarity with the people of Australia during this difficult time,” the Prime Minister said.
