Congress workers staged a demonstration in Nagpur on Wednesday, condemning the detention of senior party leader Rahul Gandhi during a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence a day earlier.

Party workers, along with leaders like Sunil Kedar, its city chief Prafulla Gudadhe and rural chief Ashvin Bais, raised slogans against the Centre and condemned the detention of Rahul Gandhi.

They reiterated their demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak issue, stressing that PM Modi must take moral responsibility and resign as well.

The Congress workers marched towards the Lok Bhavan, located in the Sadar area of the city. The police had placed barricades to stop them. When the protesters attempted to cross the barricades, cops detained several of them and took them away from the spot in police vehicles.

In a dramatic turn of events, opposition leaders, including Congress’ Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, were forcibly removed by police on Tuesday after they staged a dharna outside the PM’s residence in Delhi, demanding his resignation. They were released after a few hours.

After his release, Gandhi said in a video that once it was clear that the government had no intentions of scheduling a debate on the students’ issue, they decided to hold the sit-in near 7 Lok Kalyan Marg.
