A roadside stop turned tragic in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district when a 23-year-old barber from Delhi allegedly slit his throat inside a highway eatery and later died after falling under a passing vehicle while attempting to run away, police said on Friday.

The deceased, identified as Salman, was originally from Bareilly and worked at a salon in the national capital. He was reportedly travelling to his hometown in a shared taxi when the incident took place on Thursday night.

According to police, the vehicle halted at a roadside “chicken point” in the Garhmukteshwar area along the highway. Salman stepped out of the taxi, entered the eatery and allegedly cut his throat with a knife kept at the establishment.

The sudden act created panic among people present at the eatery. Police said that as Salman tried to run out of the outlet, he fell under a passing vehicle.

Station House Officer Devendra Bisht of the Garhmukteshwar police station said officers rushed to the spot after receiving information and immediately took the injured man to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have informed the family of the deceased and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
