In a major administrative reshuffle of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across the country on Thursday, President Droupadi Murmu has appointed veteran Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain as Governor of Bihar.
Lt Gen Hasnain, in his term as AAmy Corps Commander in Srinagar, became famous for his approach in dealing with terrorism by befriending locals.
Hasnain has been associated with many think tanks on strategic affairs and was a member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). He is a prolific writer and a regular commentator on television on national and international affairs.
His moving into Lok Bhavans (Formerly Raj Bhawan) was speculated for long. Bihar is an important state in Indian politics
According to an official communique from the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi has been appointed as the new Governor of West Bengal, succeeding Dr C V Ananda Bose, who resigned earlier on Thursday.
Lt Gen Hasnain posted a message of gratitude for his NDMA collegues who had earlier asked the government to appoint him as Governor on X:
As part of the comprehensive administrative restructuring, Vinai Kumar Saxena has been transferred from his position as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, while former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the new Lieutenant Governor of Delhi.
In other key changes, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has been named Governor of Telangana, while Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has been transferred to serve as Governor of Maharashtra.
Additionally, senior leader Nand Kishore Yadav has been appointed Governor of Nagaland, and Lieutenant General (Retired) Syed Ata Hasnain has been named Governor of Bihar.
Furthermore, Kavinder Gupta, the outgoing Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, has been appointed Governor of Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will discharge the additional functions of the Governor of Tamil Nadu.
According to an official communique issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, these appointments will take effect from the dates on which the respective appointees assume charge of their offices.
