Delhi Police on Saturday arrested sub-contractor Rajesh Prajapati in connection with the death of a 25-year-old motorcyclist who fell into a deep, uncovered pit allegedly dug by the Delhi Jal Board during roadwork in West Delhi’s Janakpuri area.

According to police, Prajapati was informed about the accident during the night but failed to take any steps to assist the injured rider.

Investigators said a family passing through the area witnessed the accident when the victim, identified as Kamal, fell into the pit. The family alerted a security guard stationed nearby, following which Prajapati was informed at around 12.22 am.

Police said the sub-contractor arrived at the location but did not inspect the pit or make any effort to rescue the motorcyclist.

The incident occurred near B3B Block in Janakpuri, close to Andhra School on Professor Jogender Singh Marg. As per the FIR, the excavation site lacked basic safety arrangements, including warning signs, reflectors, barricades and adequate lighting. It also noted that no security personnel had been deployed at the site.

The FIR further stated that the pit had been left open in the middle of a public road without any safety measures, posing a serious risk to commuters.

When police reached the spot, they found an unidentified man along with his motorcycle lying inside a pit measuring approximately 20 feet in length, 13 feet in width and about 14 feet in depth. The pit had reportedly been dug as part of ongoing roadwork.

With the assistance of the fire brigade, the injured man was pulled out of the pit and rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in a PCR vehicle. However, hospital authorities later informed police that the victim had been brought dead.
