New Delhi
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday announced that 500 new electric buses will be introduced on the city’s roads on Sunday, taking the capital’s total e-bus fleet to 4,000 — the highest for any city in the country.
The chief minister made the announcement after laying the foundation stone for development projects worth ₹400 crore in the Matiala Assembly constituency of West Delhi.
Gupta said the Delhi government has set an ambitious target of expanding the electric bus fleet to 11,000 vehicles, ensuring access to clean and affordable public transport in every part of the city within the next two years.
“Delhi has emerged as the national leader in electric public transport. With the induction of these 500 buses, our e-bus strength will reach 4,000,” she said.
Highlighting development initiatives in Matiala, Gupta said the constituency — one of Delhi’s largest and predominantly rural — has been allotted the highest development funds.
“The rural belts of the capital, along with unauthorised colonies and slum clusters, must be revitalised. Without their development, the goal of a Viksit Delhi cannot be achieved,” she said.
The chief minister also said that the rural development board, which had remained defunct under the previous government, has now been revived, with projects worth ₹1,700 crore approved.
