A former sarpanch who was run over by an SUV during a protest against road encroachment last week died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Ajmer, police said.

Govind Ram Gurjar was critically injured on February 11 during a protest by residents of Dumda village. Following news of his death, members of the Gurjar community and local residents gathered outside the hospital mortuary, demanding the arrest of all those involved.

Some protesters briefly entered the hospital premises and raised slogans in the trauma ward, prompting intervention by police and administrative officials, who are holding talks to defuse tensions.

Om Prakash Bhadana, chairman of the Devnarayan Board, reached the hospital and accused the administration of not acting with adequate seriousness in the case.

According to police, Gurjar was hit by an SUV during the protest and had been undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit since then.
