US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Friday highlighted pharmaceuticals and the Pax Silica technology partnership as central pillars of the growing India-US strategic relationship, describing India as a trusted partner in securing critical supply chains and shaping future technologies.

Speaking at the US-India TRUST Initiative event, “Advancing Partnership in Research and Innovation,” at Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Gor said India’s expanding role in pharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum technologies reflected its emergence as a major global power centre.

Emphasising India’s importance in healthcare, the ambassador noted that nearly 40 per cent of generic medicines used in the United States are sourced from India. He said this reliance reflected the high level of trust Washington places in India’s pharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities and its role in ensuring resilient supply chains for critical medicines and active pharmaceutical ingredients.

Gor revealed that India had become one of the largest contributors to new US-bound investments, particularly in the pharmaceutical sector. According to him, India announced around USD 20.5 billion in new investments for the coming year, of which nearly USD 19 billion is related to pharmaceuticals. He described the collaboration as essential not only for economic growth but also for reducing global supply chain risks and preventing medicine shortages.

The ambassador also highlighted India’s inclusion in the Pax Silica initiative, a US-backed framework focused on trusted technology ecosystems and resilient supply chains in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and quantum computing. India was among the first ten countries invited to join the initiative, which, according to Gor, reflected strong American confidence in India’s technology ecosystem, governance, and strategic reliability.

Referring to the broader TRUST initiative launched during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s February visit to Washington, Gor said the partnership aims to deepen cooperation in emerging technologies, defence, biotechnology, energy, and space. He added that growing American investments in India demonstrated confidence in the country’s policy environment and its openness to innovation and global technology partnerships.
