New Delhi
The Ministry of Jal Shakti on Wednesday announced that the 9th India International Water Week 2026 will be held in New Delhi from September 22 to 26, focusing on climate-resilient water management amid growing concerns over floods, erratic rainfall and water stress.
Union Jal Shakti Minister C. R. Patil said the event will host thematic discussions on water conservation, efficient usage and sustainable management practices across the sector. A field visit is also planned on the concluding day.
Patil added that the second International WASH Conference will be organised alongside the main event from September 22 to 24 at the same venue, bringing together experts, researchers, NGOs, state governments and central ministries.
Highlighting the urgency of water challenges, the minister said water availability is steadily declining and stressed the need to reduce wastage, improve conservation and expand water harvesting systems. He noted that population growth and industrial expansion would place additional pressure on water resources, making both quantity and quality critical concerns.
He also said the government is working on restoring rivers and water bodies, including projects linked to the Yamuna River and the development of Amrit Sarovar Mission.
On rural drinking water supply, Patil said the Jal Jeevan Mission has been extended until 2028. Around three crore households are yet to receive tap water connections, he said, adding that sufficient funds have been allocated to complete coverage.
V. L. Kantha Rao said this would be the first edition officially branded as “India International Water Week,” reflecting broader global participation.

Key discussions will focus on governance, technology, climate risk management, community participation and financing for water resilience.
