The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh on Saturday paid tribute to former Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of his death anniversary, remembering his contribution to the country's Liberation War and his role in inspiring resistance against oppression during a critical period in Bangladesh's history.
In a message shared on social media platform X, the High Commission recalled Ziaur Rahman's historic radio broadcast in March 1971, describing it as a defining moment that galvanized people in their struggle for freedom and ultimately contributed to the liberation of Bangladesh.
The mission stated that Ziaur Rahman's address inspired countless people to stand up against injustice and helped shape the movement that led to the country's independence. It also reaffirmed India's enduring solidarity with the people of Bangladesh, highlighting the shared sacrifices made during the Liberation War and the common aspirations for peace, development and prosperity.
Bangladesh is marking the 45th anniversary of Ziaur Rahman's death on Friday. He was assassinated on May 30, 1981, while serving as President of Bangladesh at the Chattagram Circuit House.
Ziaur Rahman remains a significant figure in Bangladesh's political history. He is the father of current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and the husband of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin also paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman, acknowledging his contribution to the 1971 Liberation War.

Ziaur Rahman is particularly remembered for his radio announcement from Kalurghat in Chattagram on March 26, 1971, in which he declared the independence of Bangladesh, a message that became a symbol of the country's struggle for freedom.
