The ruling CPI(M) and the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) opposition in Kerala on Saturday called for a detailed investigation into the death of prominent businessman and Confident Group chairman C J Roy, stressing that the circumstances surrounding the incident must be fully examined.
CPI(M) state secretary M V Govindan, Rajya Sabha MP A A Rahim and Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan expressed concern over the incident and said clarity was needed on the factors that led to Roy’s death.
Speaking to reporters, Govindan questioned the manner in which central agencies conduct raids, asking why greater sensitivity is not shown during such operations. He alleged that officials continued their search at Roy’s office even after news of his death had emerged.
In a Facebook post, A A Rahim said it must be examined whether Roy was subjected to undue pressure during the actions taken by central agencies. He also expressed condolences to the businessman’s family.
Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan described the incident as “mysterious” and demanded an impartial probe. He said it was unclear what kind of treatment or pressure Roy may have faced from Income Tax officials prior to his death.
Actor Mohanlal also paid tribute to the businessman, expressing deep sorrow over the loss. In a social media post, the superstar said the death of his close friend was difficult to come to terms with and extended his condolences to Roy’s family. Mohanlal had previously collaborated with Roy, who had produced a couple of films featuring the actor.
Police in Bengaluru said Roy died by suicide on Friday afternoon at his office during an Income Tax raid.
