Noted lyricist and writer Prasoon Joshi has been appointed Chairman of Prasar Bharati, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Saturday.
Joshi, widely recognised for his contributions to films, advertising, and public communication, will now head the Prasar Bharati Board. Over the years, he has been associated with several acclaimed songs, campaigns, and creative initiatives.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw congratulated Joshi on his appointment, praising his creative achievements and deep connection with Indian culture. He expressed confidence that Joshi’s leadership would bring renewed direction and innovation to the public broadcaster.
Joshi has been serving as Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification since 2017, where he has overseen film certification processes and worked closely with the film industry. Prior to that, he held leadership roles in the advertising sector, including positions with McCann World Group in India and the Asia-Pacific region. He is also associated as a trustee with the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts.
Established under the Prasar Bharati Act of 1990 and operational since 1997, Prasar Bharati manages India’s public broadcasting services, including All India Radio and Doordarshan. These platforms deliver news, educational programming, and entertainment content across multiple languages nationwide.

The organisation has also expanded into digital broadcasting with initiatives like the Waves OTT platform, aimed at strengthening free-to-air online streaming services in line with its public service mandate.
