Hyderabad
The city hosted a large-scale yoga celebration as thousands gathered for a Yoga Mahotsav, marking the 50-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga 2026.
The event was organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of Ayush and took place at Kanha Shanti Vanam.
According to officials, more than 6,000 participants performed Bhujangasana simultaneously, setting a new benchmark that was recognised by the Asia Book of Records for the largest gathering executing the asana together. The mass demonstration symbolised collective well-being and the growing popularity of yoga as a shared practice.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy attended the programme and described yoga as a valuable contribution from India to the world. He noted that its adoption by people globally reflects its relevance in addressing modern challenges such as stress and lifestyle-related issues. He also suggested that Hyderabad could evolve into an international centre for yoga and holistic wellness.
Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush Prataprao Jadhav highlighted the expanding global influence of yoga, attributing its growth to continued policy support. He pointed to initiatives such as “Yoga 365,” aimed at encouraging daily practice, including a 100-day free training programme leading up to June 21.
The minister also announced that the next Yoga Mahotsav, marking the 25-day countdown, will be held in Khajuraho, linking India’s cultural heritage with wellness traditions.
The gathering saw participation from several dignitaries, including Kamlesh D. Patel, senior officials from the Ministry of Ayush, and representatives from multiple countries. The presence of international delegates from over 20 nations underscored yoga’s expanding global reach.
A major highlight of the event was the demonstration of the Common Yoga Protocol, led by experts from the institute, followed by a guided meditation session. Cultural elements such as a Natyayoga performance and an international yoga fusion presentation added to the programme.
