Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, accusing the party of hypocrisy over its response to the vandalisation of the shrine of Sufi poet Baba Bulleh Shah in Mussoorie.

In a post on X, the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said BJP leaders are quick to showcase religious outreach abroad, including hosting Middle Eastern religious leaders, but remain silent when symbols of India’s syncretic tradition are targeted at home.

“BJP leaders are seen posing in mosques overseas and welcoming sheikhs from the Middle East, yet back in India they appear indifferent when a Sufi shrine is attacked,” Mehbooba said.

She alleged that the ruling party was deliberately following a policy of double standards and ignoring acts that damage communal harmony.

According to Mehbooba, such selective outrage reflects an attempt to divert attention from pressing domestic issues such as unemployment, economic distress and growing uncertainty faced by the youth.

Her remarks came in response to an incident on January 24, when right-wing activists allegedly vandalised the shrine of Baba Bulleh Shah in Uttarakhand’s Mussoorie.
