Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level telephonic conversation with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday, focusing on the escalating West Asia conflict and the urgent need to safeguard global energy routes.

In a post on X, Modi described the exchange as “useful,” reiterating India’s position in favour of de-escalation and early restoration of peace. He also emphasised that keeping the Strait of Hormuz “open, secure and accessible” is essential for the global economy.

Diplomatic push for stability

Both leaders agreed to remain in contact regarding efforts to stabilise the region. The conversation comes amid signs of a possible pause in hostilities, with Trump recently indicating “productive” discussions with Iran and extending a deadline for potential strikes.

Modi, addressing Parliament, said India has been actively engaging with all key stakeholders, including Iran, Israel, Gulf nations, and the United States, to promote dialogue and reduce tensions.

“India has opted for a solution through dialogue… We are in continuous contact with all sides,” he said.

Focus on maritime and energy security

With the Strait of Hormuz under strain due to the conflict, India has prioritised safe passage of its ships and energy supplies. Officials reiterated that the strait remains an international waterway, and no formal permission is required for transit, though safety assessments are ongoing.

In a key development, two Indian LPG carriers—Jag Vasant and Pine Gas—successfully navigated the high-risk route, carrying over 92,000 metric tonnes of LPG. The vessels are expected to reach Indian shores within 48 hours.

This follows earlier successful transits of MT Shivalik and MT Nanda Devi, each carrying significant LPG cargo equivalent to roughly a day’s cooking gas consumption in India.

Ensuring safety of citizens

The government also reiterated that the safety of the Indian diaspora in the region remains a top priority, alongside efforts to maintain uninterrupted energy supplies.

Strategic importance

The developments come as tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt global energy markets and shipping lanes. With Iran earlier warning against allowing “enemy ships” through the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring safe navigation has become a critical international concern.
