Kailash Makwana on Tuesday said the Madhya Pradesh Police followed all prescribed procedures while investigating the alleged dowry death of former model Twisha Sharma and voluntarily recommended a CBI inquiry after her family sought a central probe.
Speaking to reporters in Indore, Makwana said the state police acted in accordance with established legal norms during the investigation.
“The state police followed established rules and procedures in this case. Since Twisha’s family requested a CBI probe, we ourselves recommended and transferred the investigation to the CBI,” he said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday re-registered the FIR against Twisha’s husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh after formally taking over the investigation.
The agency invoked provisions related to dowry death, cruelty by husband or relatives and common intention under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, which had also been applied by the state police.
Twisha Sharma was allegedly found hanging at her in-laws’ residence in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal on May 12.
Her family has accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide, while the in-laws have claimed that she struggled with drug addiction.
During the interaction, Makwana also said Madhya Pradesh had become free of Naxal activity by December 11, 2025, due to sustained efforts by the police force.
He, however, added that police deployment and operations continue in forested regions previously affected by Left-wing extremism to prevent any resurgence.
Describing staff shortage as a major challenge for the state police, the DGP said filling vacant posts was crucial in view of the upcoming Simhastha fair scheduled to be held in Ujjain in 2028.
Makwana said recruitment for 8,500 police posts was conducted last year and approval had been sought from the state government for recruitment to another 10,500 posts this year.
