Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday praised the installation of a bust of Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, India’s first and only Indian Governor-General, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Modi described the move as a reflection of the nation’s commitment to honour those who shaped India’s destiny and to move beyond remnants of a colonial mindset.

The bust was unveiled by President Droupadi Murmu on Monday. Writing on X, Modi said, “A commendable effort that reflects India’s resolve to honour those who shaped our destiny and shed remnants of a colonial mindset. Rajaji was a towering scholar, freedom fighter, thinker, and administrator. His life embodied integrity, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the nation.”

Rajagopalachari’s bust has been placed at the grand open staircase near Ashok Mandap, replacing that of Edwin Lutyens, the architect of several iconic New Delhi landmarks including Rashtrapati Bhavan, North Block, South Block, and India Gate.

Modi also highlighted the ongoing Rajaji Utsav, saying it is an excellent initiative showcasing Rajaji’s multifaceted contributions to the nation. “I urge everyone to visit and draw inspiration,” he added in a post on X.

In his Sunday monthly radio address Mann Ki Baat, Modi noted that colonial-era statues were allowed to remain in Rashtrapati Bhavan after independence, while those of India’s greatest leaders were often excluded. He said replacing the statue of Lutyens with Rajagopalachari’s bust symbolizes the country’s shift from celebrating colonial symbols to valuing Indian heritage.
