President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday began her first visit to Manipur since assuming office, arriving at Imphal Airport on an Indian Air Force flight. Security was tightened across the state as militant groups called for a shutdown during her visit.

During her two-day trip, Murmu is scheduled to attend a polo event at Mapal Kangjeibung, offer prayers at Shree Govindajee temple, and participate in a civic reception at the City Convention Centre. On Friday, she is expected to take part in the Nupi Lan commemorations and visit Naga-majority Senapati district.

The visit comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions in the state, with over 260 deaths and thousands displaced since May 2023. Normal life in Imphal Valley was partially disrupted due to a bandh called by banned outfits protesting the President’s visit.
