Senior PTI leader Latif Khosa has written to Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, raising serious concerns over the manner in which jailed former prime minister Imran Khan was medically examined, Dawn reported on Monday.

According to the report, Khosa expressed reservations about the medical check-up conducted at Adiala Jail on Sunday, alleging that it was carried out in “secrecy” without informing Khan’s family members or trusted physicians.

The examination followed directions from the Supreme Court to assess Khan’s health before February 16, after the bench was informed that he had only “15 per cent vision left in his right eye.” A medical team visited the prison on February 15 to evaluate his condition.

However, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has contested the process, objecting to what it described as the exclusion of Khan’s relatives and personal doctors.

In his letter, Khosa — acting as legal counsel in the Toshakhana case — argued that conducting the examination “in secrecy, without notice to the family or independent doctors, has given rise to serious apprehensions.” He maintained that the continued exclusion of the former premier’s family and personal medical practitioners had created “unavoidable doubts.”

Khosa warned that such secrecy undermines confidence in the medical process and is causing distress among Khan’s family, friends and supporters. Highlighting Khan’s age of 73, he described his health as a matter of grave concern not only for his family but for the people of Pakistan.

Referring to a report submitted to the apex court by Barrister Salman Safdar on February 11, Khosa termed the findings “alarming,” alleging that the document confirmed Khan had approximately 15 per cent vision in his right eye. He further claimed that despite repeated complaints of blurred vision, no timely or adequate medical intervention had been undertaken by jail authorities.

Khosa rejected assertions that the family had voluntarily skipped the Sunday check-up, calling such claims “wholly incorrect and unrealistic.” He alleged that neither family members nor personal physicians were informed and that a “panel of handpicked doctors” was used for the examination.

The letter also noted that Khan has repeatedly sought access to his personal doctors, including Faisal Sultan and Asim Yousaf, for an independent medical review. While meetings were previously permitted under jail regulations, Khosa claimed that no such meetings have been allowed for several months, effectively denying the family access to the incarcerated leader.
