Chandigarh
The Punjab government has announced a reduction in electricity tariffs for both domestic and commercial consumers, with the revised rates set to come into effect from April 1, state Power Minister Sanjeev Arora said on Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Chandigarh, Arora said the tariff for domestic consumers has been lowered by 70 paise per unit. The state already provides 300 units of free electricity every month to residential users.
He said the latest relief will benefit those households whose monthly power consumption exceeds the free quota and who pay for additional usage. Apart from the tariff cut, fixed charges for domestic consumers have also been reduced by Rs 5 to Rs 10 per kilowatt per month.
The minister also announced relief for traders and shopkeepers, stating that electricity rates for commercial consumers have been reduced by 65 to 79 paise per unit depending on their load capacity.
In a move aimed at promoting electric mobility, the government has fixed a uniform tariff of Rs 5 per unit for charging electric vehicles, which Arora described as the lowest rate among all consumer categories.
He added that fixed charges for industrial connections of up to 100 kilowatts have also been reduced, while there will be no hike in tariffs for the industrial sector in the financial year 2026–27.

Arora further said advocates will now be billed at residential tariff rates instead of commercial rates, a step taken in response to their long-standing demand.
