Repolling was underway on Saturday at a polling booth in the Karimganj North Assembly constituency in Assam’s Sribhumi district after re-election was ordered following clashes between supporters of the BJP and Congress two days ago, officials said.

Officials said polling was proceeding smoothly and turnout was expected to rise through the day, adding that arrangements had been made to ensure free and fair voting.

The re-election was ordered after reports of disturbances on April 9, the polling day for the Assam Assembly elections.

There are 14 candidates in the fray in the Barak Valley constituency, with a triangular contest involving BJP candidate Subrata Bhattacharjee, Congress nominee Jakaria Ahmed and AIUDF contender Choudhury Hibbur Rasul Usama Mabrur.

The constituency had recorded an overall polling percentage of 86.15 per cent on Thursday.
