The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted interim bail to Alt News co-founder and fact checker Mohammed Zubair in all the six FIRs registered against him by the Uttar Pradesh police.

The apex court also quashed the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the state government to investigate the cases against Zubair.

It noted that the SIT is rendered redundant and disbanded.

The SC also directed the clubbing of all six FIRs filed in UP with the one filed in Delhi. He can now approach the Delhi HC for quashing of all the FIRs.

The court said: “Power of arrest should be used sparingly.”

Zubair is currently in custody for an allegedly derogatory tweet he made in 2018. He is charged with spreading enmity between different religions and spreading communal disharmony.
