An undertrial inmate lodged in the district jail in Anantnag died after being shifted to a hospital following complaints of illness, officials said on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Suneel Kumar, a resident of Gandhi Camp in Jalandhar, Punjab. He was facing charges in a case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and was being held as an undertrial prisoner.
According to officials, Kumar reported feeling unwell during the night while in custody. Jail authorities subsequently arranged for his transfer to the Government Medical College Anantnag for medical treatment.
However, he died during treatment at the hospital, officials said.
Authorities have initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which deals with inquiries in cases of custodial or suspicious deaths.

Officials said further details regarding the circumstances leading to the inmate's death are awaited, and an investigation is underway.
