The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has directed all power distribution companies to impose a 10 per cent surcharge on electricity bills issued in June 2026, citing increased fuel and power procurement costs.
The additional charge will be levied under the Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge (FPPAS) mechanism and will apply to consumers across all categories.
In an official communication, Pankaj Saxena, Chief Engineer of the Regulatory Affairs Unit (RAU), said the surcharge is being implemented in accordance with the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) Regulations, 2025, notified on March 26, 2025.
Under the regulations, any increase in power purchase and transmission expenses incurred by distribution companies is recovered from consumers after a three-month gap. Consequently, the additional costs incurred in March 2026 will be passed on to consumers through electricity bills issued in June 2026.
According to the calculation made under Clause 16(4) of the MYT Regulations, the applicable FPPAS for March 2026 has been fixed at 10 per cent. UPPCL has instructed all distribution companies to implement the surcharge uniformly and publish the detailed calculation sheet on their websites to ensure transparency.
The notification states that the surcharge is meant to compensate distribution utilities for fluctuations in fuel prices and power procurement expenses, which directly affect operational costs.
The increase comes at a time when consumers are already facing higher fuel costs. Petrol and diesel prices have been revised upward multiple times in recent weeks amid volatility in global crude oil markets and continuing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Following the latest revision, petrol prices in Delhi have crossed ₹100 per litre, while diesel prices have also recorded significant increases, adding further pressure on household and transportation expenses.
