External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India values Thailand as a “long-time friend” and an important maritime neighbour, stressing that regular exchanges are essential amid fast-changing geopolitical and economic challenges.
He made the remarks during bilateral talks with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow, who is on his first official visit to India from November 28 to December 2.
Jaishankar recalled their earlier meeting in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit and conveyed condolences on the passing of Thailand’s Queen Mother Sirikit. He also extended greetings ahead of Thailand’s National Day.
Highlighting the longstanding cultural and strategic ties between the two countries, Jaishankar said India’s Act East policy aligns closely with Thailand’s Look West policy. He noted that relations were elevated to a strategic partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bangkok for the BIMSTEC Summit in April 2025.
