President of the All-India Ulema Board of Madhya Pradesh, Qazi Syed Anas Ali Nadvi, has asked the Qazis, who administer nikah (Islamic wedding) to be careful about solemnizing the interfaith marriages given the growing complaints of ‘love jihad.’

The board has issued guidelines to the Qazis that make them ensure that the parents of both the groom and bride are present on the occasion of nikah of a couple.

“We have received complaints from across the state (Madhya Pradesh) about such weddings that involve religious conversion. We are examining these cases. I appeal to the Qazis that if someone comes for solemnizing nikah with a non-Muslim, it should be avoided.

“This is necessary to maintain peace in the country,” he said.

Qazi Syed Anas Ali Nadvi said that complaints have poured in about people of different religions getting married secretly and these leading to disharmony.

In his letter to the Qazis he has said that according to Islamic law, a nikah is not allowed without the consent and presence of the parents of the woman and the man.

“It is necessary to check the documents at the time of marriage registration. You should read the nikah only after you are satisfied.”

He said in the letter: “It is not right to change one’s religion for getting married.”

Qazi Anas said that in many cases it has come to the board’s notice where people have changed their names in the Islamic way only for the registration of their marriage. This, he said was common among the boys and the girls."

According to the Islamic system, conversion done only for purpose of marriage is neither religious nor legally recognized.

He warned that action will be taken against the Qazi who read the nikah in violation of the guidelines and Islamic law. He said such a person will be held guilty of working against the interests of the community.
He said the Board will take action against Qazis who violate the norms. “Islam does not allow conversion just for the sake of marriage,” he said.
