Change is the principle of life, and the media is also a part of that change. First, there were newspapers; today we have apps. Similarly, social media has also become a necessity of the times. Verse eleven of Surah Ar-Ra'd from the Muslim holy book, the Quran, says that Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change their own. This means that in this age of technology, we too must understand our responsibilities and improve ourselves.
Dr Amna Mirza of Delhi University said this while speaking with Saquib Salim on his latest podcast 'Deen aur Duniya' at Awaz-the Voice. The podcast was on the subject of modern technology, the impact of social media on society, and the role of women in it.
The conversation began with the observation that social media has emerged in the last 10-20 years and spread throughout the world. It is an important part of our lives. Some people consider it very bad, while others consider it essential. There are even fatwas from some quarters that girls should be kept away from mobile phones and social media.
Dr Amna Mirza said that first and foremost, we must understand that change is the law of nature. Change is the reality of life.
She said the real issue is how ordinary people adapt to this change. Personal responsibility is paramount, as the Quran also says that individuals must improve their own circumstances.
“Technology has impacted our way of thinking and social relationships. We must understand that it is our responsibility to use social media for good purposes. Allah knows what good we are doing. We should not harbour the misconception that only our opinion is correct.”

Dr Amina Mirza explained that social media is a double-edged sword. It has both advantages and disadvantages. Today, many women are advancing through education, business, fashion, and skills from the comfort of their homes. They are creating their own platforms at low cost and gaining new identities. This digital age is opening a new window for women, where they can make their voices heard by the world.
The discussion also highlighted that gender resistance still exists on social media. Girls face more criticism than boys. Muslim girls, in particular, are targeted in the name of religion. They are questioned about why they posted a picture or why they were seen with a boy.
Dr. Amina Mirza clarified that it is wrong to attack others by misusing religion. The wrongdoer is not the one who posts a picture, but the one who judges others in the name of religion.
On trolling, Amna Mirza said that trolling has a mental impact on girls, and sometimes it leads them to withdraw from social media. The solution is for women to move forward with a strong mindset and use social media responsibly. They should maintain pure intentions and continue their good work. They shouldn't lose heart because of people's negative comments.
Is social media making women neglect their homes? According to Dr. Amina Mirza, this understanding comes from a patriarchal mindset.” There is no objection when men spend hours on screens, but a woman is immediately criticised.”
She said today, technology is helping women manage both their homes and work more effectively.

She clarified that women were left behind during the industrial revolution, but the current digital age is different. Today, knowledge is the greatest power. Even with limited resources, women can start businesses and educational activities through social media. This has given women a new voice and new opportunities.
Finally, the balance between religious and worldly life was discussed. Dr. Amna Mirza said that this balance has to be created by oneself. If the intention is good, then social media can also become a means of worship. She conveyed the message that women should move forward without fear, acquire knowledge, create their own identity, and play a positive role in both religious and worldly life.
Amna Mirza said the way to life is striking a balance between religion and worldly life. The balance should be natural.” Worship is involved in every moment. It is not right to withdraw from both religion and worldly life. If the intention is pure, the paths become easier. Social media should be used for good, not for showing off.
She shared that she has been using social media since 2010 and has never faced any abusive comments. She has always maintained a positive attitude. Life is short, so one should continue doing good work honestly. This is the balance between religion and worldly life.
