India’s Abhay Singh went down fighting against Egypt’s former world No. 1 Karim Gawad in the men’s quarterfinals of the Grasshopper Cup in Zurich.
World No. 24 Singh staged a spirited comeback in the opening game after trailing 0-6, pushing it into a tie-break. He also matched world No. 4 Gawad closely in the second game before the Egyptian second seed sealed a narrow 12-10, 11-9 victory.
After the match, Gawad praised Singh’s quality and unpredictability, saying the Indian was among the smartest and most talented players on tour. He added that Singh’s rapid comeback in the first game showed how dangerous he can be.

Earlier in the tournament, Singh had recorded an impressive win over Egypt’s Aly Abou Eleinen, ranked world No. 13, to reach the first PSA Gold-level quarterfinal of his career.
