Dr. Fazlur Rahman Talukdar of Barak Valley in Assam, who teaches at Cambridge University in the UK, has found the link between the environment and the occurrence of cancer through his research.
It’s a breakthrough for humanity in understanding the causes of this neat fatal disease.
After earning a PhD from Assam University, he got immersed in cancer research.
In his research, Dr. Fazlur set out to answer a question that haunts the world today: Why does cancer occur? Is there a direct connection between our eating habits and deteriorating lifestyles?
He closely observed the local conditions of Assam and the incidence of cancer among its people. This dedication led to an invitation to work at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organisation (WHO).
There, Dr. Rahman collaborated with leading scientists from around the world, using cutting-edge technology and data to understand how environmental changes were affecting human cells.
The results of his research are now being published in leading medical journals around the world. The international community is impressed by how this scientist, from a small town, is helping to formulate effective cancer prevention policies.
Dr. Fazlur Rahman was born in Badarpur, Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj). He teaches genomics at Cambridge University and researches life-threatening diseases like cancer. But the path to getting here wasn't a bed of roses.
Dr. Rahman's father, Mahmudur Rahman, a former General Manager of Hindustan Paper Corporation, says that Fazlur possessed a unique sense of restlessness from childhood. That restlessness was to learn new things and understand the world more closely.
When Fazlur was in the eleventh grade, he told his father that he wanted to become a scientist. At that time, in an area like Badarpur, such ideas seemed impossible. Resources were scarce, and facilities were limited.
But Fazlur never looked back.
Dr. Rahman's work is primarily based on genomics. Simply put, he investigates how our genes and environmental pollution interact to create cancer within the body.
His father, Mahmudur Rahman, is filled with pride on his son's achievements. He says Fazlur has proven that if you have talent and aren't afraid to work hard, nothing in the world is beyond your reach.
As he has studied from a regular government school, nailing criticism that only” good schools in the private sector can make work miracles with students.
Dr. Fazlur has shown that research isn't limited to laboratories, but rather serves as a means to the betterment of society and the preservation of humanity.
Even while teaching at Cambridge, he hasn't forgotten his roots. He still considers the soil of Assam the foundation of his success. One of the most important aspects of Dr. Fazlur's research is that he views cancer not just as a disease but as a social problem.
Through his research, he emphasises the need to develop policies that can protect the common man from the clutches of this disease.
