Former India opener Virender Sehwag hailed the West Indies for displaying outstanding resilience after the visitors batted an astonishing 164 overs in the fourth innings to pull off a memorable draw against New Zealand in the opening Test at Hagley Oval on Saturday.
The Caribbean fightback was headlined by Justin Greaves, who slammed a majestic maiden double century, remaining unbeaten on 202 off 388 deliveries with 19 fours. Kemar Roach played the role of an immovable wall at the other end, frustrating the Kiwi attack with a gritty 58 off 233 balls.
Applauding their heroic effort, Sehwag wrote on X:
“What a valiant effort by the West Indies to save the Test match. Great character, grit and resilience to play out 164 overs. Test cricket mein sahi ranneti chahiye.”
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin joined in the praise, celebrating Greaves’ historic knock and Roach’s determination, while also highlighting Shai Hope’s century.
