At least one person was killed as a gunman fired at former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan’s container as it entered Wazirabad in Punjab province for the long march to mobilise people.

Khan sustained injuries and was seen being carried on a stretcher. He was shifted to Lahore and is reported to be stable. Seven leaders of Pakistan-Tehreek-e-insaaf (PTI) were injured in the attack.

The police said the deceased has been identified as Muazzam Nawaz. He was a local PTI activist and had come to see Khan.

PTI leader Fawad Choudhary claimed had the shooter not been stopped by the crowd, he could have wiped the entire leadership of the PTI.

Khan was hit but is reportedly stable.

Footage on television showed an injured Imran Khan waving to supporters after reportedly being shot and then being carried to his bulletproof pickup truck.

Faisal Javed Khan, a Senator of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who was injured in "the firing incident" near the container carrying Imran Khan during the long march, has said it was an "assassination attempt" on the former Pakistan Prime Minister, according to media reports.

The “assassin” was arrested by police. He later admitted on camera that he wanted to kill Imran Khan for he was trying to mislead the nation.

He claimed that he was on his own and had been tracking the movements of Khan from Lahore.

Faisal Javed Khan, who was covered in blood because of the injuries sustained during the firing incident, said he was injured in the "assassination attempt" on Imran Khan.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sought a report from Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah. He also directed the Interior Minister to get a report from the Punjab Chief Secretary and IGP Punjab.PTI secretary general Asad Umar said Imran Khan is being shifted to Lahore after the firing incident.

As the incident took place in Punjab, the Chief Minister of the province Parvez Elahi instructed the provincial IGP to submit a report after a thorough investigation.

"Those behind this incident will be brought to justice soon and the injured will be provided the best medical care," the Chief Minister said.
