Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan was taken to a local hospital on Tuesday for treatment of an eye condition before being sent back to prison.
Khan, 74, was diagnosed in January with right central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), an eye disorder affecting blood flow in the retina. He was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for follow-up care, where doctors administered a fourth intravitreal anti-VEGF injection. He had last received treatment on March 23.
A hospital spokesperson said Khan was examined by ophthalmologists before the procedure and found clinically stable. Optical coherence tomography tests reportedly showed improvement in his condition. Officials added that he remained stable before, during and after the treatment and was discharged with follow-up instructions.
Khan’s family and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have demanded that he be shifted to a private hospital and allowed treatment in the presence of family members and personal doctors.
PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan confirmed the medical visit in a post on X and said concerns over Khan’s treatment arrangements remained unresolved. He added that proper medical supervision for Khan and his wife was their fundamental right.
Bushra Bibi also underwent eye surgery at a hospital in Rawalpindi on April 17 before being returned to Adiala Jail.
