US President Donald Trump on Wednesday described India as a key strategic partner in addressing regional and global challenges, stating that New Delhi is expected to play an important role in efforts aimed at ensuring stability in West Asia.

The remarks came after Trump held talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, where the two leaders discussed issues ranging from maritime security and trade cooperation to developments in the Gulf region.

Responding to a question about India's potential involvement in West Asia, Trump said he believed India would continue to be an influential player under Modi's leadership.

“India has an important role in global affairs, and as long as Prime Minister Modi is leading the country, it will continue to play a significant part,” Trump said.

The US President also pointed to the strong relationship between the two countries and expressed optimism about ongoing trade negotiations, saying Washington and New Delhi were making substantial progress and were nearing the conclusion of a trade agreement.

During the discussions, Prime Minister Modi praised Trump's efforts to promote peace and stability in West Asia and expressed hope that recent diplomatic initiatives would lead to lasting peace across the region.

Modi stressed the importance of maintaining stability in the Gulf, noting that uninterrupted access through the Strait of Hormuz remains critical for global trade and energy supplies.

The Prime Minister also highlighted concerns regarding the safety of commercial shipping crews operating in areas affected by regional tensions, particularly Indian seafarers.

Emphasising India's commitment to the welfare of its maritime workforce, Modi said the protection of Indian sailors was a matter of priority and expressed confidence that their security would be adequately addressed under emerging regional peace arrangements.

The meeting carried considerable significance as it marked the first face-to-face interaction between Modi and Trump in more than 16 months. It took place at a time when developments in West Asia, maritime security concerns, and trade negotiations are increasingly shaping international diplomacy.

Held in the French town of Évian-les-Bains, the discussions reflected the continuing efforts by India and the United States to strengthen their strategic partnership amid evolving geopolitical circumstances.

The cordial interaction was consistent with Trump's earlier public remarks about Modi. The US President has frequently praised the Indian leader and often spoken positively about their working relationship.
