At least twelve people lost their lives in a shooting incident at Sydney’s Bondi Beach, New South Wales Police confirmed to CNN. One of the suspected gunmen was also killed during the incident.

Responding to the attack, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the scenes unfolding at the iconic beach as “shocking and distressing.” He said police and emergency services were actively responding on the ground and working to save lives.

Authorities said the security operation was still underway, with law enforcement personnel deployed across the area. New South Wales Police issued a public advisory on social media, urging anyone present at the scene to take shelter and advising the public to stay away from Bondi Beach and its surrounding localities until further notice.

Several people sustained injuries in the shooting, according to reports by the Sydney Morning Herald. A witness quoted by the newspaper said the situation was chaotic, claiming to have seen at least ten people lying on the ground amid bloodshed.

Meanwhile, Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, told Sky News that the shooting took place during an event at the beach marking the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which began at sundown on the same day.

Videos shared on social media platform X appeared to capture moments of panic, showing people running across Bondi Beach as gunshots and police sirens rang out. However, the authenticity of the footage could not be independently verified at the time.

A spokesperson for Prime Minister Albanese acknowledged the developing situation, stating that authorities were aware of an active security threat in Bondi and urged people in the area to strictly follow instructions issued by New South Wales Police.

Police later confirmed that two individuals had been taken into custody following reports of gunfire at the beach. In an update posted on X, New South Wales Police reiterated that the operation remained ongoing and once again asked the public to avoid the area.

The Sydney Morning Herald further reported that multiple shots were fired at the well-known beach, though officials initially refrained from confirming casualty figures as emergency responders continued to assess the situation.
