India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday on the sidelines of the BRICS National Security Advisers’ meeting in New Delhi, with both sides reviewing recent developments in bilateral relations and efforts towards normalising ties.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions were constructive and focused on strengthening mutual trust and understanding between the two neighbours.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the two sides assessed progress in bilateral engagement and acknowledged advances made towards the gradual restoration of normal relations. Doval emphasised that stable, predictable and constructive ties are essential for building confidence and enhancing cooperation.

Senior Indian officials present at the meeting included Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, Ambassador Vikram Doraiswami and Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai.

The meeting took place as India, the current chair of the BRICS grouping, hosts the high-level security dialogue in the national capital.

The engagement is being viewed as part of the continuing efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise relations following the prolonged tensions that emerged after the 2020 border clashes. Since 2024, both countries have taken steps aimed at reducing friction and restoring diplomatic engagement through regular dialogue.

Wang Yi had previously visited New Delhi in August last year for the 24th meeting of the Special Representatives on the India-China boundary question, where both sides stressed the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border as a prerequisite for the broader development of bilateral relations.

The latest interaction also follows meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of major international gatherings, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin last year.

During those engagements, the two leaders welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral ties and reiterated that India and China should view each other as development partners rather than rivals, while ensuring that differences do not escalate into disputes.

India has consistently maintained that a stable and cooperative relationship between the two countries, based on mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity, is important not only for their own development but also for the emergence of a multipolar world and a multipolar Asia.
