Prof Najma Akhtar to receive Padam Shri

President Ram Nath Kovind will confer Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, on Prof. Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday. Prof Najma Akhtar is being honoured for her outstanding and valuable services in the field of literature and education.

Prof. Najma Akhtar holds the distinction of being the first woman VICE chancellor of the Jamia milia islamia. She is widely regarded as one of the leading educationist in the field of higher education and delivery of quality education.

Under her guidance, Jamia Millia Islamia has secured the sixth position in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. Among the central universities, JMI has achieved a remarkable success in the performance test with a score of 95.23%.

Prof. Najma Akhtar was born on November 13, 1955. She holds a PhD in the field of Education from a Comprehensive Study on Conventional and Distance Education System of Higher Education. She is recipient of a Gold medal in her M.A.

She has done her MA in Education and M.Sc in Botany.

She served as Professor and head of the Department of Training and Capacity Building in Education at the National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUPA), New Delhi. Prof Bajma Akhtar is the Founding Director of the State Institute of Educational Management and Training (SIEMAT) in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Prof. Akhtar has worked in the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANU) Hyderabad, Delhi University, Assam University and Jamia Millia Islamia has also been a visitor to the appointment committee and admission committee.

She was also a member of the Board's High Authority Committee, a member of the High Level Expert Committee of the Ministry of Defense, a member of the National Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, Board of Management, Jamia Hamdard, Delhi Member of the General Assembly of Indian Council. Of Cultural Relations (ICCR) New Delhi, Member National Academic Advisory Committee, Indian Social Science Academy and Search Committee for Appointment of New Vice Chancellor of Kashmir University.  IT Delhi, Member University Council Cluster University, Srinagar and Member Governing Council, Association of Indian Universities.
