Gandhinagar
The Gujarat government is leveraging modern technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to transform its cities into smart urban centres, with a pilot project in Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation aimed at tackling issues caused by stray cattle.
Following the establishment of the AI Centre of Excellence in Gandhinagar under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, officials are integrating advanced technology to improve citizen services and urban management.
Stray cows in Ahmedabad often create traffic hazards. Currently, municipal teams manually track cattle using CCTV images, microchips, and RFID tags—a process that is time-consuming.
To streamline this, the AI Centre of Excellence at GIFT City has commissioned an agency to develop a deep-learning model that can identify cows in real time from CCTV feeds and trace their owners. The system uses the cow’s nose, which has a unique pattern similar to human fingerprints, along with facial marks or eye patterns, to match the animal with municipal records.
At present, about 1.1 lakh cows in Ahmedabad are fitted with RFID tags and microchips, and cameras at 130 junctions capture their images.

If successful, the AI-driven solution is expected to reduce traffic problems, prevent cattle-related accidents, and create a data-based monitoring system to manage stray cattle more efficiently, officials said.
