Former Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai on Tuesday met senior Bharatiya Janata Party leaders in the national capital and conveyed his views regarding his proposed resignation and possible exit from the party, sources said.
During the meeting, Annamalai held discussions with BJP president Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh.
Sources indicated that Annamalai also shared his assessment of the political situation in Tamil Nadu, including the factors he believes contributed to the BJP's poor performance in the recent Assembly elections and the measures required to strengthen the party's presence in the state.
According to sources, Annamalai clearly presented his position before the leadership. The party is expected to deliberate on the matter and communicate its response either later on Tuesday or by Wednesday morning.
Following the leadership's decision, Annamalai is likely to address the media and clarify his future course of action, including whether he intends to remain with the BJP or launch a new political outfit.
Speculation regarding his political plans has intensified in recent days. Responding to rumours circulating on social media about a possible departure from the BJP and the formation of a new party, Annamalai had said on Monday that he would speak on the issue after discussions over the next two days.
His comments came amid growing public interest in his next move. Ahead of his birthday on June 4, posters carrying messages such as "Our Leader, Come and Lead Us" have appeared at several locations in Coimbatore, fuelling further speculation.
The developments come in the wake of a dramatic political shift in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections. The newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, secured 108 seats in its maiden electoral contest, ending the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in the state.
