Karnataka Chief Minister-designate D.K. Shivakumar has outlined an ambitious vision for the state ahead of his swearing-in ceremony, promising dedicated governance, inclusive development and a renewed focus on youth empowerment.

In an exclusive interaction, Shivakumar said he was humbled by the trust placed in him and acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. He said his priority would be to work tirelessly to meet public expectations and steer Karnataka towards a new phase of growth.

Expressing gratitude for the confidence reposed in him, the Congress leader said leadership comes with significant responsibility and that he intends to discharge his duties with sincerity and commitment. He admitted that the road ahead may not be easy but said he was prepared to navigate difficult circumstances while remaining focused on delivering results.

Shivakumar emphasised Karnataka's pivotal role in India's growth story, particularly through Bengaluru, which he described as the country's global face in technology and innovation. He said his government would strive to further strengthen the state's position while ensuring that the benefits of development reach all sections of society.

According to him, farmers, women, youth and other communities would remain at the centre of his administration's agenda. He also spoke of ushering in what he termed a new "Yuva Yuga", signalling a greater emphasis on opportunities and participation for young people.

Reflecting on his political journey, Shivakumar credited the Congress leadership for providing him opportunities over the years. He said his longstanding association with the party and its leadership was built on loyalty and trust.

Recalling his admiration for former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he said his commitment to the Congress ideology had remained steadfast throughout his political career. He also praised the sacrifices made by Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, stating that their decisions and public engagement had strengthened his resolve to remain dedicated to the party's principles.

Speaking about becoming Chief Minister, Shivakumar said the achievement was not the fulfilment of a personal dream but the result of years of hard work and perseverance. He described his elevation as a recognition of the efforts of an ordinary Congress worker who remained committed to democratic values and the party's legacy despite facing difficult phases in public life.

The leadership transition in Karnataka comes after the Congress government completed three years in office. Speculation regarding a change in leadership had persisted for several months, particularly after the government crossed the halfway mark of its term.

The change was set in motion after outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah resigned last week, paving the way for Shivakumar's elevation. He was unanimously elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Congress high command is finalising the composition of the new Council of Ministers that will serve under Shivakumar. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi held discussions in New Delhi on Tuesday with Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah to finalise the cabinet lineup and deliberate on candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections.
