The Assam Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state, while keeping tribal communities outside its purview. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared this information.
Addressing a press conference after chairing the first Cabinet meeting of his government’s second term, the Chief Minister said the UCC Bill will be introduced in the new Assembly on May 26.
He said, “This is an important decision taken in the first Cabinet meeting, and it is in line with the promise we made during the elections.”
Sarma noted that states like Uttarakhand, Goa, and Gujarat have already implemented the UCC, but Assam’s version has been tailored to meet the state’s specific needs.

He further clarified that the tribal population has been completely exempted from the scope of the UCC. All customs, traditions, and practices followed by the people of Assam will remain outside its ambit.
The Chief Minister added that the UCC will regulate matters related to inheritance, marriage, live-in relationships, and mandatory registration of marriages and divorces.
