The Assam cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in the state, with the tribal population being kept outside its ambit, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced.

Addressing a press conference after chairing the first cabinet meeting of his second term, Sarma said the UCC Bill will be introduced in the new Assam Legislative Assembly on May 26.

He described the move as a major policy decision taken at the very first cabinet meeting of the new government, saying it fulfils a key promise made by the ruling alliance during the election campaign.

According to the chief minister, while states such as Uttarakhand, Goa and Gujarat have already moved toward implementing the Uniform Civil Code, Assam has tailored its framework to suit the state’s unique social and cultural requirements.

Sarma said tribal communities in Assam would be fully exempted from the law’s provisions, ensuring that their traditional customs, social practices and community rituals remain protected.

He added that the proposed legislation would primarily govern matters related to marriage, divorce, succession, live-in relationships, and the mandatory registration of marriages and divorces.
