The Assam Congress on Tuesday filed a police complaint against the ruling BJP for allegedly circulating a controversial video of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on social media.
Congress legislators Sibamoni Bora and Diganta Barman submitted the complaint at the Dispur Police Station here.
The complaint pertains to a video shared by the Assam BJP on its official social media handle on Saturday. The clip purportedly shows Sarma aiming a rifle and firing at two individuals—one wearing a skull cap and another with a beard—with the caption “point-blank shot.”
The video was subsequently taken down following widespread political criticism.
The Congress alleged that the clip symbolically depicted the chief minister “firing at Muslims at point-blank range.”
According to the complaint, the video carried superimposed phrases such as “foreigner-free Assam” and “there is no forgiveness to Bangladeshis,” which, the party claimed, indirectly targeted Bengal-origin Muslims in the state, often pejoratively referred to as “Miyas” or “Bangladeshis.”
The MLAs stated that the content was “highly provocative, communal in nature and capable of disturbing social harmony.”
On Monday, state Congress president Gaurav Gogoi accused the chief minister of “inciting genocide” through such videos and urged the police to take suo motu cognisance of the matter.
Chief Minister Sarma, however, denied any knowledge of the video on Monday.
Separately, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi also lodged a complaint with the Hyderabad Police, seeking criminal action against Sarma over the now-deleted clip.
Responding to the complaint, Sarma said he was unaware of the video and added that he had no objection to legal action.

“If any case has been filed against me, arrest me. I am ready to go to jail. I will always stand by my words. I am opposed to Bangladeshi infiltrators and will continue to be so,” the chief minister said.
