Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad is the 10th and current Grand Mufti of India, appointed in February 2019. As a prominent Sunni scholar from Kerala, he leads the All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama.
Awaz-the Voice spoke with Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad briefly before he departed for Dubai.
Excerpts:
Aslam Ailekum, how was your meeting with the Prime Minister?
This meeting was part of my journey for humanity. (The 16-day "Kerala Yatra" organised by the Kerala Muslim Jama'ath under the theme "With the People" and "With Humanity" that he led in January). I visited several places in Kerala during the Kerala Yatra. I briefed the Prime Minister about the situation in all these places. He was very receptive. The Prime Minister would do the needful. Even the Chief Minister (Kerala) would do his bit. Action on some issues is still being contemplated. All required steps will be taken within the parameters of the rules and law.
What specific issues did you bring to the notice of Prime Minister?
The meeting went off well and lasted for about half an hour. We discussed the Waqf (Amendment Act, recently passed by the Parliament). We discussed responsibilities and the real situation. The Prime Minister had several questions, and I furnished him with all the information in detail.

Markaz Jamiyyathul Ulama has set a new standard in the field of education. Did you discuss this issue with the Prime Minister?
I told him about our journey of education that started with just one branch in Kerala and how it’s growing. There is a lot more to be done in this field. We have tried to spread education. I sought the Prime Minister’s cooperation in this mission.
Was the issue of social harmony or the current situation in the country discussed?
I told him that nobody gains with internal squabbling. I told PM that growth and progress happen only when there is harmony and brotherhood in the country.
What is your message for Ramadan?
